Australia Day - nation's largest annual public celebration

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia and observed annually on 26 January. Australia Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year for Australians.  This is the occasion when most people will be off to celebrate the important event marking the independence of Australia.


 History

 It is a major holiday commemorating the arrival of Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet of 11 ships and approximately 1,350 men, who arrived in Botany Bay between 18 and 20 January 1788 to form a colony.  New territory for England.  However, the area was deemed unsuitable for settlement and they moved north to Port Jackson on January 26, 1788, stopping at Camp Cove, which became known as the "praetor" of the Cadigals.

 The main symbols of Australia Day are those of Australia.  These include the national flag, with representatives of the Jack Union, the Commonwealth Star and Five Stars of the Southern Cross, and the national anthem "Advance Australia Fair".  There are also other symbols such as the Golden Wattle - Australia's national flower, opal - the national gem and the national colors of green and yellow.

 Community life

 Australia Day is a public holiday in all states and territories.  All schools and post offices are closed.  Some public transport services are not working.  Stores are usually open, but opening hours may be less than weekdays.  This is a day for all Australians to rest, so traffic jams can happen.

 What will Australians do?

 Australia's National Day is a holiday for the whole people with hundreds of large and small events taking place across the country.  In Sydney, thousands of people gathered along Sydney's beaches to celebrate.  In towns and cities there are community breakfasts, beach parties, Australian folk dance, concerts, parades and beauty pageants, sports competitions, historical and cultural exhibitions and more.  with a fireworks display.  Hold a naturalization ceremony to welcome new citizens.  This is the day for Australians to celebrate all that is great about Australia.
 Australia Day, Australia's National Day is not just a public holiday.  Whether you are in the city, the coast or the countryside, there are many programs and events for the whole family to enjoy and feel the greatness of being an Australian citizen.  Australia Day is a recognized public holiday with hundreds of large and small events taking place across the country.
